Introduction:
Whether you’re in “The Patch” or at “The Rig” or “On Location” there are certain tools needed every day and every hour you work. Here are some basics for the “Oilfield Guy” at any level. Whether you are a “Rough Neck” or the Superintendent, there are tools you will need constantly.
the Multitool:
The multitool is a pair of pliers, a knife, screwdriver, a can opener, and anything else you can think of. Some have hatchets and saws. It’s They first thing most men reach for when they need a tool. They come with various attachments and even “side cars” full of bits and extras. Some are small and simple and some are large and extremely intricate. As a rule they fit in a small belt case so they are very accessible.
The Light:
We start early in the morning, we work late in the evening, and some of us work night shifts. A good light is a must to see and do a good job at work. Some lights are head lamps, and some are belt carried flash lights, and some a combination. When working with your hands like a mechanic or hand, a hands free light like a head lamp is the best. For shoulders up personnel like engineers and techs the flash light may be a better option. Regardless, sight and light are a must.
The adjustable pipe wrench
This item is a bit more specialized. Pipe wrenches are muscle, plain and simple. A need in the oilfield world. Most crews have steel pipe wrenches, some up tp 60″. These can weigh up to eighty pounds. Definitely muscle, but sometimes overkill. Milwaukee has come up with a pound per pound option that is being noticed in the industry. This adjustable pipe wrench is turning up in tool boxes everywhere. It’s known as “The Cheater”. It works as an eleven inch to a twenty four in pipe wrench. It makes small jobs extremely easy and is a coveted addition to any mans tool box.
conclusion:
When we head to work we want to look like we know what we are doing and have what we need to do the job. The oilfield worker with a multitool on his belt, a light in his pocket, and a Cheater looks like he knows what he is doing and is at the top of the food chain. These options are great gifts and great tools for anyone headed to “The Patch” for a days work.
