Evolution of the Monkey Wrench

The Stillson Monkey Wrench…Noted for being the one wrench that fits all.  They came in different sizes and copied by other manufacturers.  It was a great piece for the tool box.

The Swedish Pipe Wrench

My first encounter with a Swedish Pipe Wrench was on the Snap On Truck with a set of PWZ 2s.  The first words out of my mouth were “take my money!”.  I now have PWZ 0s, 1s, 2s (two pairs), 3s, and 4s.  They get used daily.  Recently I saw a set by Irwin, another great name in tools.  That sparked my interests.  What are these things called?  Where did they come from?  Who was the genius that invented these?  Turns out the Swedes got the credit.

It turns out this is a one tool shot for that guy.  Below are the sizes commonly needed for the size equipment that work is being performed on.

For cars and ATVs:  15 inch units or 1 1/2″ opening size

For trucks and medium duty:  17 inch units or 1 3/4″ opening size

For heavy duty:  22 inch units or larger
